First look at Angelina Jolie as Maleficent

It's been rumoured for a long time now, and finally it's all official: Angelina Jolie will take on the title role in Maleficent - and we have the first look at her playing Disney's most beloved villain.

The film will be directed by Robert Stromberg (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland), written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) and produced by Angelina Jolie, Matt Smith et al.

As reported earlier, Elle Fanning has been cast as Princess Aurora (who is sucked into a deep slumber by Maleficent).

Maleficent will finally reveal the story behind the villian that was first introduced to us in 1959's Sleeping Beauty. The movie will reveal the events that lead to Maleficent's hardened heart.

Maleficent will be released in 3D and is currently scheduled for a March 13, 2014 release.
